It was really sad to read the report about the domestic helper who was apparently burned by her employer. Saudi authorities along with officials from the Philippines Embassy are probing the case.
Unquestionably this investigation is both opportune and welcome. Such brutal actions should not be tolerated and the culprits should be punished irrespective of their status or wealth. Since the images of this poor woman and her awful injuries were posted on social media, there has been an understandable uproar. Now, with news of the investigation, it’s evident that the outcry has become the talk of the town.
In my opinion this incident should prompt us to check abuse of domestic servants. But there must also be a lesson for those who take up offers from domestic help agencies that appear too good to be true. Mostly hired domestic helpers come from far-flung villages with no knowledge of the Arabic language. Apparently such sad incidents take place due to language barriers
