Of all his political contenders, perhaps the last thing Lebanese President Michel Aoun expected was that he would be challenged — at what political commentators are referring to as a coronation rather than a parliamentary election session — by none other than Lebanese model-turned-singer Myriam Klink.
Klink, who is equally known for her semi-naked photo-shoots as well as her controversial political statements, actually received a presidential vote during the first round of Monday’s Parliament session, in which General Aoun failed to win before finally securing enough votes later on to be named president.
However, Klink’s nomination was voided by speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri who reminded observers that the vote was invalid given that she is of Greek Orthodox faith, while the president of Lebanon — as per the Taif Accord — must be a Maronite.
Whilst the vote was not serious, and was most likely meant as an act of objection or a just as a joke, it still generated headlines instantly in Lebanon and quickly became the most trending topic among social media users.
Many were wild-guessing who was the MP who voted for Klink; others cracked jokes that whoever the MP was, he will definitely be rewarded generously by the raunchy blonde bombshell.
Klink is no stranger to politics; in 2014 she has made headlines by visiting Syrian regime President Bashar Assad who she declared she is a fan of. However, she didn’t reveal the nature of the audience she was granted with Assad.
Apologizing to her fans at the time, she said she could not disclose the details of “important matters, especially politicals! [sic].”
She has also posed naked behind the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran to show support to their football team and also had an unsuccessful bid to run as a Greek Orthodox MP.
