RIYADH: The Ministry of Commerce and Investment said four foreign workers were given prison terms and face deportation for selling fake detergents to hospitals.
The local media, quoting the ministry, said the four workers had claimed the detergents were genuine products.
Acting on a tip about a store in the Sulay district in eastern Riyadh, a joint inspection team from the Ministry of Commerce and Investment and from the Ministry for Health raided the site.
The joint team witnessed workers pouring various chemical products into new containers and then adding the labels of popular detergent brands. These detergents were analyzed and determined to be fake as they had no effect in killing bacteria, which could cause the spread of disease in hospitals.
The four workers each face a prison sentence of six months. They will then be deported.
They have also been banned from re-entering the Kingdom, said the Ministry of Commerce and Investment, adding that the detergents seized will be destroyed in the appropriate way.
The ministry is committed to protecting consumers from commercial fraud. It stressed their teams would continue ongoing inspections to detect irregularities.
