ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to reach Islamabad on Sunday evening after making a brief stopover in Jeddah where he arrived earlier in the day on a Saudi Airlines flight from New York after addressing the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Khan left the United States on Saturday afternoon by a commercial flight after his special plane, arranged by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, developed a technical fault.
“The prime minister has left for Pakistan from Jeddah after a brief stayover there. Our workers and leaders have started reaching the airport to accord a historic welcome [to the PM],” Ahmad Jawad, information secretary of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, told Arab News.
He said that Khan had raised the Kashmir issue effectively at the UNGA and during his interactions with other world leaders. “This is for the first time that a Pakistani prime minister has spoken from his heart about human rights abuses in Kashmir by Indian forces and underscored the world’s apathy to the issue,” he added.
Earlier, the prime minister visited Saudi Arabia on September 19-20 to hold meetings with the Saudi king and crown prince before proceeding to New York for the UNGA session.
“Saudi Arabia is one of our trusted allies and it has always extended generous support to deal with our numerous issues,” Jawad said. “The Kingdom’s leadership is playing its part in defusing tensions with India and resolving the Kashmir dispute.”
