ISLAMABAD: A massive fire which erupted Sunday morning in Lahore’s main electronics market, Hafeez Center, continues to rage despite rescue efforts-- with millions of rupees worth of equipment inside.

The centrally located multi-floor market has over a hundred shops and is a popular haunt for gadget aficionados and customers looking to buy and sell phones, laptops and accessories-- as well as getting quick fixes for any tech trouble.

Rescue efforts have been underway for hours, with a number of officials reaching the site of the fire, including the city commissioner, the deputy commissioner and provincial health minister.

The chief minister of Punjab province, Usman Buzdar, took note of the incident and ordered an inquiry into the cause of the fire.

“Priority should be given to rescuing people stuck inside,” he said and directed an “immediate investigation” into the incident, as per the Government of Punjab Twitter page.

Local media reported the flames first erupted on the second floor of the building, which is usually near-empty on Sundays with most shops closed.

No casualties have been reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
