  • NCOC head Asad Umar encourages people aged 50 plus to register for vaccination starting March 30
  • Pakistan is aiming to vaccinate around 70 million people out of 220 million population to reach herd immunity

ISLAMABAD: Asad Umar, the head of Pakistan’s National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), the government’s central body dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, said on Friday Pakistan would start registering people aged above 50 years to receive the coronavirus vaccine, starting March 30.
Pakistan is aiming to vaccinate around 70 million people out of its 220 million population to reach herd immunity. It started a coronavirus vaccination drive with health workers in February. In March, it announced a vaccination campaign for the general public, beginning with those above the age of 60.
“Registration of those who are 50 plus for covid vaccination will be opened on March 30th,” planning minister Umar said on Twitter. “Registration of those who are 60 and older has already been open. Encourage everybody who is 50 plus to register when the registration is opened for them on 30th.”

China’s Sinopharm and CansinoBio, Sputnik-V and the AstraZeneca vaccines have been approved for emergency use in Pakistan.
According to official data, the government has vaccinated over 450,000 people so far across the country, relying on Sinopharm jabs donated by China. Pakistan has a population of over 220 million people.
