DUBAI: Spanish fashion label Zara came under fire in Turkey this week for using food in its latest shoe campaign.

The advertisement featured images of sandals placed on loafs of bread and colorful heels stuffed with ice cream and fruits.

The fast fashion brand’s campaign sparked anger online, with social media users accusing Zara of “disrespecting” food, and calling on shoppers to boycott the brand.

“What kind of ad is that!!!! There are people around the world starving from lack of food and you're playing around with it,” wrote one user on Twitter, while another said: “The bread is sacred for lots of people all over the world. Also some people cannot access bread. Shame on you.”

Other Twitter users are asking the brand to apologize. “You should apologise for this ridiculous advertisement,” tweeted one shopper.

Twitter users created the hashtag #ZaraHaddiniBil, which translates to “Zara know your place” in Turkish.

Arab News has reached out to Zara for a comment.
