RIYADH, 7 December — Transcon Cargo managed by Abdullah Lising & coached by Ver Paule, the first conference champions, defeated Yamaha Al Dawliah 77-76 in the opening game of the Riyadh Basketball League (RBL) second conference, held at the Al Yamamah Hotel.

Once again the dynamic duo of Jun Quiambao and Elmer Gomez who scored 23 and 21 points respectively led the team into the hard fought victory against the Yamaha Al Dawliah team. Transcon led 10 points at the end of the first quarter but the Yamaha Al Dawliah managed by Engr. Jamal Bargouty & coached by Lito Gutierez, made an amazingly great comeback thru the effort of Rey Manigbas, who scored 13 of his 22 points output in the second quarter, that led into dead lock at the half. Each team has capitalized on their defensive capabilities. Trancons offense did not receive much backing from the bench. A. Crisaldo poured 8 of his 18 points mainly in the fourth quarter and sank back-to-back basket in the final minute of the game. Z. Paule made 6 points and J.Lapastora and M. Velasquez added 4 points each. J. Quiambao was the best player of the game.

Yamaha Al Dawliah put up a tough defense on the Transcon squad, but the much more experience and cohesive team fouled out Rey Manigbas and J. Libramonte who score 22 and 14 points respectively. J. De Leon scored 21 points but was in foul trouble in the end of the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Metro Star Express managed by Romy Ocbena & coached by James Cabral asserted their might by downing coach Joel Magpantay TFC ABS-CBN squad 123-66 in the second. Dalisay, Sabala, Maquilan and Berboso who scored 22,19,15,14 points respectively spearheaded the convincing victory. Dalisay scored 14 of his 22-point in the first quarter and led 9 points in the first quarter; advanced the lead to 22 at the half and never look back until the end of the game. Metro Star received a lot of backings from the bench. Coach Cabral capitalized on the consistency and good defense which was the main factor of the almost half advantage against TFC ABS-CBN.

The game somehow implies that the second conference will be a tournament to watch. A new breed of daring and more consistent players is just around the corner. With more participating team in this second conference the RBL is gearing up for the most exciting and unpredictable tournament in this last month of the year 2001.
