JEDDAH, 13 March — Interior Minister Prince Naif yesterday urged all governors to abide by the recent circular issued by Crown Prince Abdullah and warned government employees against negligence in carrying out their duties.

“The higher the position of a government employee, the greater will be his responsibility,” he told the annual meeting of regional governors. He said the work of officials will be looked into to see whether they are performing their jobs in a competent fashion.

Referring to the circular issued by Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, Naif said: “We should deal with all citizens equally, protect their rights and properties and complete their paperwork without delay.”

The interior minister also emphasized the need to modernize and develop the administrative system, better utilize available resources and control expenditure in accordance with budget allocations.

Prince Naif revealed that special departments will be opened in all governorates in the Kingdom to deal with problems facing women in the country.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of regional governors, he said the meeting had discussed problems related to female teachers and their accommodation.

He urged the Presidency of Girls’ Education to encourage Saudi female teachers to take jobs in far-off places, by providing special remuneration, in order to have Saudi female teachers and administrators in all areas.

Prince Naif described the annual meeting of governors as extremely important.

“We discussed here not merely the responsibilities of governorates, but all matters related to a region,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Province governorate has ordered all government departments in the region that they should take action as per the law against employees who are absent from work repeatedly, arrive late at work or leave the office before the end of official working hours.

The governorate issued the order in light of the findings of the Commission for Supervision and Investigation. The commission said most government departments did not take any action against the absent employees, except for occasionally cutting the salaries for the days they did not work.
