ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s federal capital will witness a ban on pillion riding on New Year’s Eve, said a notification circulated by the office of the district magistrate on Friday, to prevent any damage to public life and property in the city.

Young people, including underage drivers, can be seen on clusters of motorbikes in Islamabad and other cities on special occasions.

Members of more affluent classes, however, use automobiles to move around while arranging New York festivities.

“[I]t has been brought to appear to me that certain pillion riders are likely to resort to violence and disrupting the peace and tranquility causing damage to public life and property on the year’s eve in the Federal Capital,” said the notification while adding there were “sufficient grounds” to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the city.

“The order shall remain enforced on 31st December, 2022, from 06:00 PM to 01st January, 2023, 02:00 AM,” it added.

The notification informed that any penalty imposed on violators would continue even after the expiration of the order.

According to Geo News, similar orders have also been issued in Karachi where the commissioner has stopped people from carrying or displaying arms and resorting to aerial firing until the morning of January 1.
