JEDDAH, 3 December 2002 — Security forces “inadvertently” shot dead a Sudanese national who left a bank with a bagful of money in Jeddah, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.
The man was fatally wounded in the head on Sunday when a bank protection unit opened fire after he refused to stop for interrogation and tried to drive away in his car, Al-Watan said.
The victim, who was leaving a branch of Saudi American Bank (SAMBA), shuttled to the bank regularly on behalf of the company for which he worked and did not have a criminal record, the paper quoted a private security guard at the bank as saying.
His Saudi sponsor said the man had been asked to withdraw SR15,000 from the bank and probably ignored the security forces’ order to stop because he feared they were thieves posing as security men.
