RIYADH, 13 March 2003 — Vendors of safety equipment are facing huge losses if war does not break out, as products including protective masks are likely to remain on the shelves, Al-Madinah reported.

Businessmen told the daily that many importers of these products have no previous experience in the business and had spent in excess of SR50 million on import. However, their hopes of large profits had so far remained unfulfilled. Saudi businessman Salem Al-Deregi said that he represents a British company to distribute gas masks and safety equipment.

“But I have guarantees that I can return unsold safety equipment to the distributor in England without any financial obligation,” he said.

“But some businesses spent millions of riyals on the import of this equipment.”
