JEDDAH, 21 March 2003 — The Defense and Aviation Ministry yesterday denied the closure of the airport in the northern city of Al-Jouf. “The report is totally baseless,” a ministry spokesman said. He also said there was no plan to close any airport other than the one at Arar which was closed on March 6 on humanitarian grounds.

Foreign news agencies reported yesterday, quoting residents, that Al-Jouf airport, close to the border with Iraq, was closed shortly after the United States began military strikes on Iraq. AFP news agency reported earlier that flights to Al-Jouf airport, some 150 kilometers south of Arar, had been canceled.

The report was based on statements of travelers who quoted airport authorities.
