Kamaluddin Ahmad Named India’s New Ambassador

RIYADH, 6 May 2003 — Kamaluddin Ahmad, former minister and a member of India’s Planning Commission, has been named the next Indian ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

He succeeds Talmiz Ahmad.

Kamaluddin Ahmad, who hails from Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh, served as a minister of state for commerce and subsequently as the Union Minister for Civil Supplies in the Narasimha Rao Cabinet. He visited Saudi Arabia as a member of the Central Haj Committee in the 1980s.

He also worked as a member of the consultative committee for the Ministry of Petroleum and Chemicals. Earlier, he served as chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation for one year in 1971. He was a Congress member for several years before he switched over to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party recently.

Born on Aug. 15, 1930, Kamaluddin Ahmad has two sons and four daughters. His special interests revolve around the socio-economic conditions of developing countries.
