Paul Wolfowitz, the American Deputy Defense Secretary, widely known to be the brain behind America’s invasion of Iraq, was quoted as saying: “For reasons that have a lot to do with the US government bureaucracy, we settled on the one issue that everyone could agree upon, which was weapons of mass destruction.” How convenient.
Mr. Wolfowitz, a man who has dedicated his political life to ensuring the security of Israel and who set up an office of special plans to harden resolve against Iraq, has been doing media aerobics trying to come up with a convincing argument to questions on why America invaded Iraq and where the weapons of mass destruction are. Wolfowitz later topped this by addressing a group of intellectuals on the difference between the Iraq issue and that of North Korea. He said, “The most important difference between the North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil.” There you go Wolfi. That’s more like you! Wolfowitz’s words are highly provocative, in addition to being wicked and arrogant, and they remove any myth that the war was fought for any other reason. There are emerging honest voices in America wondering what is going on. Congressman Dennis Kucinich, leader of Congressional opposition to the Iraq war, took to the House floor last week to continue pressing for the truth about the administration’s drive to war. He believes: “The credibility gap is growing. First the administration said it had to sweep aside the UN inspections and the UN Security Council because Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that were an imminent threat.” “Now their story is changing: Iraq had a weapons ‘program’, there are no longer weapons of mass destruction, but a program. If this administration can fabricate reasons for war after the fact, where will America be headed for next?”
“Congress must demand accountability for the wanton exercise of power, for the loss of life, the destruction of property, the waste of dollars and the damage to America’s reputation. Thirty-three members of the House have now signed the Resolution of Inquiry to demand the White House to tell the truth.” Kucinich’s Resolution of Inquiry, demanding the administration over intelligence to back its pre-war claims about Iraq, was introduced Thursday and has growing support. It is a privileged resolution and must be voted on in Committee within 14 legislative days of being introduced. Having led Congressional opposition to the Iraq war and Bush’s foreign policy since last summer, Dennis Kucinich is now campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination on a platform of peace, justice, equality and sustainability. I remember hearing and seeing all this. I remember Clinton wagging his index finger at the whole world and saying: “I never had sexual relations with that woman”, referring to White House intern Monica Lewinsky and his fling with her. America never used to tolerate lies. America impeached presidents who lied and fired officials who did. The war on Iraq has been nothing but lies, one after the other. They must not be allowed to go on.
