Happy Halladay Strikes Again for Blue Jays

BOSTON, 19 July 2003 — Roy Halladay won his 14th consecutive decision and newcomer Bobby Kielty homered, had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays past the Boston Red Sox 5-2 in the American League on Thursday.

Halladay (14-2) tossed a complete game nine-hitter, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and no walks. It was his second complete game of the season and seventh of his career.

The Blue Jays pitcher now leads the majors in wins and is unbeaten in 16 starts since losing to the New York Yankees April 15.

Kielty was making his Toronto debut after being acquired for Shannon Stewart in a trade during the All-Star break. He had RBI singles in the second and fourth innings and later scored, then hit his 10th homer of the season in the sixth.

Reed Johnson produced a bases-loaded double in the fourth to blow open the game against starter Derek Lowe (10-4), who took the loss. Lowe lasted four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Orioles 2 Angels 1

In Baltimore, Jeff Conine thumped a go-ahead homer in the fourth inning to give the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Angels. Luis Matos had two hits, including an RBI single in the third. Rodrigo Lopez (3-5) allowed one run and five hits in a seven-inning start and Jorge Julio walked one in the ninth before recording his 19th save of the season.

Yankees 5 Indians 4

In New York, Hideki Matsui homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Derek Jeter tied the game with a two-run blast in the eighth. Mariano Rivera (4-0) pitched a scoreless ninth in relief of starter Andy Pettitte, who gave up four runs and seven hits in seven innings. Shane Spencer cracked a solo homer in the second for the Indians. David Riske (2-2) allowed two runs and two hits after coming on with one out in the eighth.

Rangers 12 Devil Rays 6

In Tampa Bay, Juan Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs to help the Texas Rangers defeat the Devil Rays 12-6.

Donnie Sadler homered and scored three times while Marcus Thames added a two-run blast for the Rangers. John Thomson (7-9) struck out nine batters and gave up three runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Joe Kennedy (3-6) lost his third game in a row after allowing eight runs, one unearned, and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Twins 6 Athletics 2

In Minneapolis, Rick Reed tossed seven solid innings to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Oakland Athletics 6-2.

Reed (5-9) allowed two runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks. Torii Hunter homered and drove in two runs while AJ Pierzynski had two hits and two RBI and Jacque Jones had three hits.

Tim Hudson (7-4) gave up six runs, four earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Mark Ellis had three hits for Oakland.

Royals 7 Mariners 1

In Kansas City, Angel Berroa homered and drove in two runs as the Royals dumped the Seattle Mariners 7-1. Raul Ibanez also had two hits and two RBI for the Royals. Jose Lima (6-0) allowed one run on five hits over six innings for the win. Freddy Garcia (9-9) gave up six runs on eight hits over five innings for the loss. Dan Wilson had two hits and one RBI for the Mariners.

Tigers 10 White Sox 9

In Chicago, Dmitri Young homered and drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers edged the White Sox 10-9 in a game that was delayed starting by rain for two hours and 45 minutes.

Kevin Witt had four hits and drove in two runs for the Tigers, while Warren Morris had three hits and two RBI. Mike Maroth (5-13) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits for the win. Joe Crede, Miguel Olivo, Carl Everett and Carlos Lee all homered for Chicago. Bartolo Colon (6-9) went 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
