JEDDAH, 7 November 2003 — Jeddah’s Hala International School, whose IGCSE students excelled in their exams this summer, conducted a science fair recently.
Children from grades 4 to 10 displayed and demonstrated a number of exhibits. “Their simple experiments are spellbinding,” said a visitor.
Senior students presented their technical models — volcanoes bursting, elevators moving up and down, and open CPU dams, swamps, periscopes, circuits, human circulatory system and earthquake demos. Visitors to the fair were impressed with the innovative products on display.
Meanwhile, figures released by the school show that 81.9 percent of students achieved the top A* grade in the IGCSE, an increase over last year. There was also a small increase in entries gaining A*, rising from 78.4 percent in 2002 to 79 percent this year. This year’s was the sixth IGCSE batch of the school. Umair Raja is the topper with five A* and one A and Rasha Rehman and Simab Atiq each got four A*. Others who got A* are Umaima Alvi, Saba Iqbal, Moonis Ahmed, Saad, Noman Shahid, Afra Ahsan, Maroof Abdulrouf, Shahkinan Khan, Usman Khanwar, Atif Shafqat and Zohaib Khan.
“The students performed well, maintained high standards set by their predecessors and achieved increases on the performance figures for last year,” its Principal Tanveer Tariq told Arab News.
“This year’s results reflect that not only do our young people work very hard but they are now better prepared, better supported and better resourced than before. Our students also benefit greatly from a focused and professional teaching force,” she added.
