ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey, 17 December 2003 — New undisputed world welterweight boxing champion Cory Spinks is not satisfied with taking his sweetest triumph. Now he wants a taste of Sugar — “Sugar” Shane Mosley that is.

The son of former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks and nephew of former world heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks upheld the family tradition here Saturday by defeating Nicaragua’s Ricardo Mayorga.

Spinks, who owned the International Boxing Federation crown, won a majority decision to take the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association titles. He won by scores of 114-112 and 117-110. A third judge scored a 114-114 draw.

Mayorga had already scheduled a tentative bout with Mosley next March, a move Spinks saw as disrespectful. After the victory, the American fighter called on WBC super welterweight champion Mosley to face him instead.“Sugar man don’t want none of this,” Spinks said, flexing his muscles. “Let’s see if he will take the fight.”

Mayorga pressed for a rematch after having had two points taken away by referee Tony Orlando, one for punching after a round-ending bell following a pair of warnings and another for holding and hitting behind the head. “I won this fight,” said Mayorga, who would have had a draw had he not lost the points.

“I’m not happy at the referee for doing me the way he did. I would like to ask Cory to give me an immediate rematch to prove I can beat him.”

Spinks has another plans.

“I don’t mind giving Mayorga a rematch but don’t Shane Mosley and Spinks sound better?” Spinks said. “After Shane Mosley, I’ll be glad to give him a rematch.”

Kevin Cunningham, Spinks’ trainer and manager, joined his fighter’s cry to bring Mosley into the ring.
