JEDDAH: All roads lead to Jeddah as the city gets ready to host key decision-makers from clubs, leagues, federations, and brands associated with the global sport of football.

World Football Summit Asia (WFS Asia) will see all parties working together to shape the future of the beautiful game, in the first-ever football industry event to be held in Saudi Arabia.

Adwa Al-Arifi, assistant minister of Sports Affairs for Saudi Arabia, is set to inaugurate WFS Asia on December 12-13, along with Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John, general secretary at the Asian Football Confederation, setting the tone for a summit that aims to foster international cooperation and growth within the sport.

Scheduled with the backdrop of the FIFA Club World Cup, the second edition of the Asian edition of WFS will bring together over 1,000 representatives and stakeholders from the football ecosystem. The event will feature 130+ speakers, with 70% of attendees being decision-makers from leading football properties and sports businesses across more than 70 countries.

Notable speakers who will participate in the event include Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and co-founder of Yunus Sports Hub, Lamia Bahaian, vice president of SAFF, Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, CEO of Atletico Madrid, Hammad Albalawi, Saudi Arabia 2034 FIFA World Cup bid team member, and football legends like Pavel Nedved, Francesco Totti and Eric Abidal.

World Football Summit, as it has done with previous editions of the summit in other regions of the world, aims to bring together key stakeholders to foster growth and collaboration in the football industry with the mission of establishing the summit as an annual fixture on the global sports business calendar.

The event promises to be a unique gathering of the main stakeholders in the industry, as it will bring together brands like Aramco, Riyadh Air, Snapchat, 433, Radisson, institutions like FIFA, SAFF, Saudi Pro League, Serie A, LALIGA, Bundesliga, FIFPRO, and clubs like Al-Nassr, Chelsea, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, and Atletico Madrid.

Hosting WFS Asia aligns with Saudi Arabia’s strategic vision to enhance its presence on the global sports stage. The event underlines the Kingdom’s dedication to fostering a rich sporting culture and its capacity to host major international events, having already secured the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, attracting talents such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Benzema. Moreover, Saudi Arabia will host 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cup.

As a result of these efforts, attendance at football matches in the country has risen 150% since the Portuguese legend joined Al-Nassr. From a business perspective, the ambition is high as the Roshn Saudi League aims to increase its market value from its current $800 million to $2.1 billion by 2030.

WFS Asia will include the participation of representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Sports, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), the Saudi Professional League, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

"We are truly honored to kick off WFS in Saudi Arabia by welcoming Adwa Al-Arifi and Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John for our inauguration,” said Jan Alessie, co-founder and director of World Football Summit.

“We are extremely proud of being able to host this edition in Saudi Arabia, and the commitment of the country to make this a landmark event for the global football industry is made tangible by the active participation of its main football and sport governing bodies. After having worked on this project for many months, we are convinced this will be the first of many editions in the country.”

Real Madrid held by Las Palmas

MADRID: Real Madrid had a second-half Vinicius Junior penalty to thank as the Spanish champions avoided a first league loss of the season in a 1-1 draw at Las Palmas on Thursday.

The Brazilian converted from the spot in the 69th minute after Alex Suarez was found guilty of handball.

Madrid had gone 1-0 down after a fifth-minute Alberto Moleiro goal.

It was a second draw in three La Liga outings for Real and leaves the capital club fourth in the standings, four points off archrivals Barcelona.

In the day’s other match, Girona put Osasuna to the sword in a crushing 4-0 victory.

Osasuna could only muster a single shot — not on target — in a game in which they won no corners and had just two touches in Girona’s penalty box.

Bryan Gil opened the scoring in the 34th minute, before Viktor Tsygankov and Abel Ruiz hit goals in a quick-fire three-minute period around 53 minutes to put the game out of reach.

Uruguay’s Cristhian Stuani wrapped up the dominant win with a fourth goal at the death.

Swiatek storms into US Open 3rd round

NEW YORK: A mental reset helped world number one Iga Swiatek charge into the third round of the US Open on Thursday with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of 217th-ranked Ena Shibahara.

Swiatek had looked shaky at times in her first-round victory over lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova, but the Polish star, aiming to add a second US Open title to her stash of four French Opens, dominated Japan’s Shibahara, who was in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time.

She needed just 65 minutes to advance to play either 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Elisabetta Cocciaretto for a place in the last 16.

She won the first seven games before Shibahara held serve to make it 1-1 in the second set, holding her nerve to save three break points in a 13-minute game that would be the only game she won.

Swiatek said the turnaround wasn’t a matter of changing her game.

“I kind of have the tools, but sometimes it’s just hard to use them,” Swiatek said. “I couldn’t really focus well on my first-round match, and I wanted to improve that.

“I gave myself time and acceptance that it may not be perfect, but step by step I can have better focus and have better mindset. Today it was for sure a little bit better.”

Swiatek said she had used her off-day practice to “get my rhythm.”

“I felt like I can play in a much more solid way, and I was making for sure better decisions,” she said.

Swiatek has won five titles this year to take her career total to 22. In addition to another French Open triumph she won at Rome and Madrid and on the hard courts of Indian Wells and Doha.

Despite her sustained success in recent years, the 23-year-old said sky-high expectations can still sometimes affect her adversely on court.

“Usually I don’t feel well on court when I have too big expectations ... because of that I make wrong decisions on court,” she said.

“So I just try to kind of reset and to remember that I don’t have to play perfect tennis all the time.”

Capacity at Wembley Stadium increased to a record 96k for Riyadh Season Card boxing event
  • The original 94,000 tickets for the event in London sold out last week and organizers applied successfully to increase the crowd size
  • A sell-out crowd would set a record for a boxing event in the UK and post-war Europe, beating the 94,000 who saw Tyson Fury defeat Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April 2022

LONDON: Approval has been granted for crowd capacity at Wembley Stadium to be increased to a record 96,000 for the Riyadh Season Card — Wembley Edition boxing event next month.

In the headline bout on Sept. 21, two-time former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will take on champion Daniel Dubois for the International Boxing Federation world heavyweight title.

General admission tickets for what will be the first Riyadh Season boxing event held in London sold out last week, based on the original event capacity of 94,000, but now that organizers have received the green light to increase capacity at England’s national stadium, additional tickets will go on sale on Friday at 12 noon, UK time, on Ticketmaster.com.

A sell-out crowd of 96,000 fans at the London stadium would set a record in the UK and post-war Europe for a boxing event, surpassing the 94,000 who watched Tyson Fury knock out Dillian Whyte at the same venue in April 2022.

The Riyadh Season Card event in London features six all-British bouts. Musical entertainment will be provided by Liam Gallagher in his first live performance since the announcement this week that he and his brother Noel will embark on an Oasis reunion tour in 2025.

The rebuilt Wembley stadium opened in 2007 on the site of the original stadium. For football matches, it has an official capacity of 90,000, and the record attendance is 89,874 for the 2008 FA Cup final in which Portsmouth defeated Cardiff City 1-0. The largest crowd at an event of any kind at the stadium was 98,000 at an Adele concert in June 2017.

The record attendance at the old Wembley Stadium was 126,047, when Bolton Wanderers beat West Ham United 2-0 in the 1923 FA Cup final.

  • Inaugural £2.3 million tournament welcomes 144 players including world’s top 16 players and former world champions to Riyadh from Aug. 30 – Sept. 7

RIYADH: The world’s best players are primed to compete in the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. The World Snooker Tour (WST) makes its highly anticipated debut in the Kingdom with the biggest international ranking event in WST history and the sport’s new major championship.

Taking place at the Green Halls, Riyadh from August 30 to September 7, the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters welcomes the finest cueists on the planet for nine days of elite competition and high-stakes showdowns. With the prestigious title and vital world ranking points on offer alongside a prize pool exceeding £2.3 million, it’s all to play for in the inaugural edition of this star-studded tournament.

Ahead of the first round action on Friday, some of the most recognized and decorated snooker players have expressed their excitement – labeling the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters as “incredible” and the “start of a new chapter” in the sport’s modern era.

With the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters confirmed for the next decade, Ronnie O’Sullivan – a seven-time world champion and the greatest player of all time – said: “It’s fantastic that the World Snooker Tour is bringing a new major championship to Saudi Arabia. As players, we’re excited to come here and play, but more importantly, it’s great for the sport and brilliant for the fans in this part of the world.

“We want to keep seeing snooker grow as much as possible in new countries all over the world. This event can certainly take our sport to a new level and inspire new generations of players and fans. I’m sure the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters will be incredible.”

Alongside O’Sullivan, the biggest names in snooker are all competing in Riyadh. Ex-world champions John Higgins, Mark Selby, Mark Williams, Luca Brecel, and Shaun Murphy line up alongside the rest of the world’s elite top 16 players which also include world no. 1 Judd Trump, world No. 2 Mark Allen and 2024 world champion Kyren Wilson.

The inaugural edition will be contested by 127 tour players, plus 17 wildcard entrants selected by the Saudi Arabian Billiards & Snooker Federation (SABSF), to create a total field of 144 players. The total prize pool is also bigger than any tournament other than the World Championship – reflecting Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to help grow snooker in the Kingdom and across the Middle East.

Another star player to applaud these efforts is 2010 world champion Neil Robertson, the most successful player from outside the UK. Austraila’s 23-time ranking event winner said of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters: “We need to break into new territories. Saudi Arabia is investing in sport to help inspire its young population to get active and lead healthy lives and it’s great that snooker is now part of this strategy.

We are getting more tournaments, with more prize money and more ranking points earning opportunities for all of the tour. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure it will be a great experience for everyone.”

Dr. Nasser Al-Shamri, President of the Saudi Billiards and Snooker Federation, said: “We are looking forward to the first edition of the Saudi Masters Snooker Championship, which will be held in Riyadh tomorrow. This is part of the transformation efforts that the sports industry in Saudi Arabia is undergoing with the support of our wise leadership, and the continuous guidance of Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal. We look forward to the participation of elite international snooker players as well as the promising Saudi players in this tournament. This will be an ideal platform for our local stars to gain experience and compete at the highest levels. We can’t wait to see who will be crowned champion of the first edition of this historic event.”

The Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters is part of an exciting legacy commitment between the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport and SABFS to develop snooker nationally and regionally over the next decade. It joins an incredible year-round schedule of international sports in Saudi Arabia and is a part of the Kingdom’s investment in sport, which aims to inspire its people to enjoy active and healthy lives as part of the country’s Vision 2030 cultural transformation.

From its investments in grassroots infrastructure to hosting international events – including motorsport, football, tennis, and boxing – the country’s Ministry of Sport has helped inspire a 48 percent increase in weekly sports participation among the local population. SABSF has also opened up opportunities – investing in grassroots facilities, events, and promotions to help inspire its young population into the sport.
