HAFR AL-BATIN, 14 March 2004 — A major fire broke out in a prison in Hafr Al-Batin while the jail’s 160 inmates were performing Friday prayers, Al-Youm reported yesterday.
According to eyewitnesses, Civil Defense units brought the fire under control two hours after it started. There were no cases of serious injuries, but two people received treatment for smoke inhalation.
The prison has about 160 prisoners.
Authorities have launched an investigation to discover the cause of the fire. They did not rule out the possibility that it was started by one of the disgruntled prisoners.
