King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) is based in the Eastern Province. The university has made its reputation educating young men in science, technology and management so that they may earn places at the forefront of Saudi business and industry. The university also furthers knowledge through research in these fields.
English is the language of instruction at KFUPM. Unlike other Saudi universities, newly admitted students must demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and English before they can move on to other studies. While KFUPM began with just a few dozen students, tens of thousands now compete annually for entry to the orientation year. Entry requirements are rigorous. Only about 10 percent of those who apply succeed in admission.
