KABUL, 19 April 2004 — Women singers have been banned from appearing on television in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar after their performances were branded un-Islamic, an official said yesterday.
“We were told that women singers should not appear on Nangarhar TV anymore,” the provincial television broadcasting director, Zubair Khaksar told AFP.
“In the last two years we always had women news presenters and women songs on television but now we have been told it is un-Islamic,” he added. Abdul Wakeel Ataak, spokesman for Nangarhar Governor Haji Din Mohammed told AFP he was unaware of the ruling.
Kabul’s television station began airing performances by female singers in January.
