NEW YORK, 14 May 2004 — Jose Guillen and Adam Kennedy both homered as the streaking Anaheim Angels won for the 10th time in 11 games by crushing the New York Yankees 11-2 in American League play at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
Anaheim had its nine-game winning streak snapped by the Yankees in a rain-delayed, six-and-a-half hour marathon on Tuesday, but got right back on track a day later to improve their AL-leading record to 23-11.
Casey Kotchman hit a three-run double in a five-run eighth inning to break open the game for the Angels, as Anaheim then cruised to victory.
Aaron Sele (2-0) went six innings for the win. He allowed two runs on six hits to beat the Yankees for just the sixth time in 16 career decisions.
Javier Vazquez (3-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over 7 1/3 innings.
The Yankees were defeated for just the third time in their last 14 games and also lost catcher Jorge Posada with a broken nose after he was hit in the face by a wayward throw.
In other games, Mike Sweeney hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to rally the Kansas City Royals past the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3. Nate Field (2-0) went two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and one walk for the win.
In Detroit, Rich Harden pitched seven solid innings, leading the Oakland Athletics to a 2-1 win over the Tigers. Harden (2-2) allowed seven hits and struck out eight to lead Oakland to its third straight win. Arthur Rhodes pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
Cliff Lee pitched six strong innings as the Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4. Lee (4-0) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking three. Tim Laker hit a two-run homer for the Indians. Tim Wakefield (2-2) allowed six runs on eight hits over six innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Doug Mirabelli had two hits and drove in a run for Boston.
Hank Blalock hit his third home run in two days as the Texas Rangers hung on to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-8. Alfonso Soriano also homered and had three RBI for Texas, while Kevin Mench and Brad Fullmer also hit homers. Chan Ho Park (2-3) gave up five runs on seven hits over seven innings while Francisco Cordero got the final out for his 12th save.
In Minneapolis, Doug Mientkiewicz hit a two-run homer as the Twins edged the Seattle Mariners 4-3. Brad Radke (3-2) allowed three runs on 10 hits over eight plus innings after carrying a shutout into the ninth.
Joe Nathan finished up for his ninth save.
Freddy Garcia (1-2) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs — three-earned — on seven hits. Edgar Martinez hit his 300th career homer for the Mariners. The game scheduled between the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles was postponed because of rain in Chicago. The teams was to make it up with a doubleheader the next day.
