NEW YORK, 17 May 2004 — Dan Wilson hit a pair of three-run doubles and the Seattle Mariners scored six runs in the top of the 13th inning to beat the New York Yankees 13-7 in American League play at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Eddie Guardado pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, which ended Seattle’s six-game losing streak and also knocked the Yankees out of first place in the AL East, half a game behind Boston. Guardado (2-0) gave up two hits while striking out three and walking one as the Mariners overcame a two home-run day by Alex Rodriguez.
With the teams tied 7-7 heading to the 13th inning, the Mariners got to Gabe White for six runs, with Wilson driving in the last three with his second bases-loaded double of the game.
In other games, Bronson Arroyo tossed a three-hitter over eight innings, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 4-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Arroyo (2-1) struck out six and walked one and combined with Keith Foulke on a four-hitter.
In Detroit, Kenny Rogers pitched 6 2/3 solid innings as the Texas Rangers eased to a 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Rogers (5-2) allowed eight hits on one run with two strikeouts and one walk.
Victor Martinez drove in five runs as the Cleveland Indians battled to a 9-7 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Jake Westbrook (3-1) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.
Torii Hunter homered twice and drove in four runs as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-1. Seth Greisinger (1-2) allowed just four hits over seven innings to pick up his first win in two years.
In Kansas City, Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 3-1 win over the Royals. Mark Mulder (4-2) pitched his second straight complete game, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts.
Vladimir Guerrero homered and had three hits as the Anaheim Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-4. Shane Halter hit a two-run homer for the Angels. Jarrod Washburn (7-1) allowed two runs on three hits over eight innings before Troy Percival got the final two outs for his 10th save.
Kendall Helps Pirates to Third Straight Win
Craig Wilson homered and Jason Kendall drove in three runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 win over the slumping Giants in National League play in San Francisco on Saturday.
The Pirates won their third straight games while the defending NL West champion Giants — without star Barry Bonds for the second straight game — lost their third straight.
Bonds did not play due to back spasms and the team said he probably would not play again until Tuesday in Chicago, where the Giants will start a series with the Cubs.
In other games, Bobby Abreu had a home run and five RBI, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 16-5 mauling of the Colorado Rockies. Jimmy Rollins had four hits for the Phillies, who had 18 hits in the game.
In St. Louis, Chris Carpenter pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings as the Cardinals eased to a 4-0 win over the Florida Marlins. Carpenter (4-1) allowed four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Mike Matheny had two hits and drove in a run for St. Louis.
In Milwaukee, Johnny Estrada had five hits and drove in five runs, leading the Atlanta Braves to an 11-6 win over the Brewers. Atlanta lost second baseman Marcus Giles with a broken collarbone. He’s expected to miss six to eight weeks.
In Los Angeles, Todd Van Poppel pitched six shutout innings to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 win over the Dodgers. Van Poppel (2-1) allowed five hits with one strikeout and one walk. Danny Graves got the last out for his 16th save.
In San Diego, Sammy Sosa hit his 549th career home run, moving him into ninth place on the all-time list, as the Chicago Cubs beat the Padres 7-5. Moises Alou homered and had four hits for Chicago, while Aramis Ramirez also homered.
