CHENGDU, China, 27 July 2004 — Saudi Arabia coach Gerard van der Lem was fired after his team were knocked out of the Asian Cup by Iraq yesterday, a team official said.
Immediately after the match Van der Lem became embroiled in a furious row with Saudi journalists and amid the confusion a Saudi official announced that the Dutchman had been sacked.
“We have fired Van der Lem,” Prince Nawaf ibn Faisal, vice-president of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation, said.
“We gave him two years and we gave him everything. But he has failed.”
Van der Lem is the 13th coach to be sacked by Saudi Arabia in the last 10 years.
