MANAMA, 15 August 2004 — Four Bahrainis in police custody here tried to commit suicide by slitting themselves with razor blades on Thursday to protest their detention.
A 29-year-old inmate, who instigated the others as well, was said to be in critical condition after he cut himself in the head, an arm and legs.
He has been described as “mentally unstable” and has received treatment at hospitals on a number of occasions in the past after attempting suicide.
Sources said he stood in front of the three others and dared them to “follow his lead” in solving their problem. Apparently they were convinced by his “approach”.
The condition of the other three, who slashed their arms and legs, is reportedly not serious.
They have been discharged from hospital. They initially refused medical treatment when the guards discovered their condition and called for medical assistance.
