RIYADH, 15 August 2004 — The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs yesterday renewed a multimillion riyal contract with a local firm to keep the holy city of Makkah clean, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The five-year SR670.9-million contract was signed with the Dallah Albaraka Group, which is charged with collecting garbage, washing pavements, squares and tunnels, and pumping out flood water.
The firm is to raise its number of workers to 15,338 to cope with an increase in visitors Makkah, who flock to its holy sites in their millions for Haj and Umrah.
As per the terms of the new contract, the company will enlighten the public, including pilgrims, on the need to keep the holy city and its surroundings tidy. It will also operate 1,100 garbage compressing trucks.
