Maddux Gets Win 301, Sosa Hits Homer 566

NEW YORK, 21 August 2004 — Greg Maddux overcame a shaky start to post his 301st career win while Sammy Sosa hit his 566th career home run as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-6 in Milwaukee on Thursday. Maddux (12-8) allowed four runs in the first inning but retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. He pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

In Philadelphia, Eric Bruntlett, Craig Biggio and Lance Berkman all homered in a seven-run seventh inning as the Houston Astros rallied to beat the slumping Phillies 12-10.

Mike Cameron homered and drove in four runs, leading the New York Mets to a 10-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in the first game of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, David Wright hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lead the Mets to the sweep with a 10-3. Scott Rolen’s error in the top of the 10th inning allowed the winning run to score, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Adam LaRoche singled in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5.

Baseball-Paul, Guerrero, Erstad Homers Guide Angels

Josh Paul, Vladimir Guerrero and Darin Erstad hit multi-run homers to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 10-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersburg.

Paul belted a grand slam, outfielder Guerrero added a three-run homer while Erstad hit a two-run shot to lift Anaheim.

In other games, Gary Sheffield hit two home runs, including a game-tying solo shot to start a four-run ninth inning rally, as the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 13-10.

Hideki Matsui drove in the winning run later in the ninth with a single and Alex Rodriguez hot his 30th homer of the season in his return from suspension. Tom Gordon (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings for the win before Mariano Rivera struck out the side in the ninth for his 41st save.

Bobby Higginson hit a pair of home runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4. Wilfredo Ledezman (3-0) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings for the win and struck out four and walked two before Gary Knotts pitched three innings for his first save.

Jon Garland (8-9) allowed seven runs - three earned — on six hits over 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
