TORONTO, 25 August 2004 — Ted Lilly tossed a complete game three-hitter and struck out a career-high 13 batters to help the host Toronto Blue Jays blank the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in the American League Monday. Lilly set a club record for most strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher. David Wells (twice) and Al Leiter held the previous mark with 11. The Red Sox’s six-game winning streak was snapped as Lilly (9-8) walked only two batters to earn the Blue Jays their fourth straight victory. Pedro Martinez (13-5) allowed three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks to take the loss.
Reed Johnson whacked a solo home run in the first inning before Vernon Wells added a sacrifice fly later in the frame. Wells left the game in the eighth with tightness in his calf muscle.
In Detroit, Jeremy Bonderman pitched a seven-hit shutout and struck out a career-high 14 batters as the Tigers destroyed the Chicago White Sox 7-0. Bonderman (7-10) walked one batter. Carlos Guillen drilled a two-run homer for Detroit and Brandon Inge also drove in two runs.
In Cleveland, Gary Sheffield stroked a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the New York Yankees a 6-4 win over the Indians. Tom Gordon (5-3) allowed one run on two hits in one inning of relief to claim the victory while Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 42nd save of the season.
In Arlington, Johan Santana pitched eight strong innings to win his seventh straight decision as the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 7-4. Santana (14-6) allowed one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Shannon Stewart and Henry Blanco homered for the Twins.
In Anaheim, Bartolo Colon tossed 7 2/3 solid innings to lead the Angels to a 9-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Colon (13-9) allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Guillen homered for Anaheim.
In Oakland, Jermaine Dye drove in two runs and Eric Chavez totaled three hits as the Athletics edged the Baltimore Orioles 4-3.
Tim Hudson (9-4) surrendered three runs, one earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth for his 14th save of the season.
In Seattle, Jose Cruz Jr homered and drove in four runs to propel the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 9-0 rout of the Mariners.
Scott Kazmir (1-0) gave up four hits over five shutout innings for the win. Rey Sanchez drove in two runs for Tampa Bay.
Lucky 13 for Clemens as Astros Defeat Phillies
Roger Clemens pitched seven strong innings to earn his 13th victory of the season and 323rd of his career as the Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-4 in the National League Monday.
Clemens (13-4) allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks after leaving his previous start early due to a calf injury.
Despite limping against the Phillies, Clemens was still sharp as he won for the first time in almost a month. The 42-year-old now trails Nolan Ryan and Don Sutton by one victory for 12th spot on the all-time wins list.
In Pittsburgh, Alex Cintron recorded an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 triumph over the Pirates. Shane Nance (1-0) collected two outs in relief for his first major league win and Greg Aquino pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
In Montreal, Juan Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning off Giovanni Carrara as the Expos edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7.
Chad Cordero (4-3) blew the save but still grabbed the win despite allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. Einar Diaz, Alex Gonzalez and Brad Wilkerson homered for Montreal.In New York, Phil Nevin homered, doubled and had five RBI as the San Diego Padres swept past the Mets 9-4.
Jake Peavy (10-3) allowed three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings for the victory. Mark Loretta had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for San Diego. Mike Cameron and David Wright homered for the Mets. Aaron Heilman (0-1) gave up four runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.
In Chicago, Carlos Zambrano carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and produced nine strikeouts as the Cubs overcame the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3.
Zambrano (12-7) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, all in the seventh. Moises Alou picked up three hits and two RBI for Chicago.
