JEDDAH, 9 November 2004 — A pickpocket specialized in stealing money and other valuables from pilgrims recently surprised his victim as he stole a pilgrim’s mobile phone handset leaving its chip behind, Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The theft took place when the pilgrim left his phone in the bathroom after doing ablutions for the taraweeh prayers at the Haram Mosque. When the pilgrim returned to get his phone, he was surprised to see only the chip. The thief was sympathetic with the pilgrim as he did not want to cause two losses at a time, the paper said.
