JEDDAH, 6 January 2005 — In a groundbreaking event, a poetry volume of English verse by a Saudi female poet and writer Nimah Ismail Nawwab will be launched in the Kingdom today. “The Unfurling” will be available to Jeddah residents at a special book signing ceremony at Jarir Bookstore on Sari Street at 7:30 in the evening.
The book signing is open to the public and will also include a treat, a recorded reading of poetry with music over the sound system at the bookstore.
Following its publication in the US and a pre-publishing book tour in July 2004 that encompassed several cities and led to readings at venues ranging from bookstores to literary foundations, the book is now available in the Kingdom through Jarir as well as through Amazon.com abroad.
“The Unfurling” that includes poems about freedom, women, family, culture, faith, tradition, tolerance and change has received rave reviews from professors, writers and poets in the Kingdom and abroad.
Nawwab has established herself as a writer, photographer and poet who is interested in global themes and issues, which has led to this must-read book for those interested in the Middle East and Arabia. Her poems have been excerpted widely in print and online by teachers and students alike.
As a reviewer noted: “Her voice speaks to the truths in all our lives regardless of nationality. It is a voice advocating justice, compassion and a basic respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere.”
