JEDDAH: The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Centre for Arabic Calligraphy, an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, has begun its second Dar Al-Qalam Residency in Jeddah Historic District.
According to a press release, the eight-week program is hosting 10 local and international artists, offering workshops, lectures, practical sessions, artistic dialogues, field trips, critiques, and research-based activities, under curator Abdelrahman Elshahed and assistant curator Layal Algain.
The residency “presents calligraphy as an evolving art form, connecting traditional techniques with fine art, AI, and light art,” the press release stated, and “supports the center’s mission to empower calligraphers, preserve traditions, and promote Arabic calligraphy as a cultural symbol, in line with the National Culture Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.”
It covers four main themes: traditional foundations, related artistic disciplines, contemporary practices, and future innovation in calligraphy.
