RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s aid agency KSrelief has launched a project to rehabilitate a water desalination plant in Sudan to strengthen water supplies for residents.

Abdullah Al-Moallem, director of KSrelief’s health and environmental aid department, said the rehabilitated plant has a production capacity of 3,000 cubic meters per day and serves about 50 neighborhoods in Port Sudan, whose population exceeds 400,000.

He added that the project includes establishing a new desalination plant at the Children’s Teaching Hospital in Port Sudan, with a capacity of 50 cubic meters per day, to provide safe drinking water and support hospital use for patients and their families.

The project is part of KSrelief’s broader humanitarian efforts in Sudan, with the total value of its projects for the Sudanese people exceeding $133 million.

KSrelief also distributed 900 food baskets to displaced families and returnees in Khartoum state, benefiting 4,782 individuals, and 1,000 cartons of dates in Al-Manaqil locality in Al-Jazirah state, benefiting 4,257 people affected by the ongoing crisis.

Meanwhile, KSrelief provided 25,000 hot meals to vulnerable families in central and southern Gaza affected by Israel’s war.

The agency also delivered Saudi Arabia’s gift of 50 tonnes of dates to Burkina Faso and distributed 850 food baskets to refugees, displaced persons, people with disabilities, and others in need in Bamako and the Gao region in Mali.

In the Syrian Arab Republic, KSrelief distributed 1,685 cartons of dates to vulnerable groups in Deir ez-Zor governorate, benefiting 1,685 families.

Since its establishment in 2015, KSrelief, in partnership with nearly 349 organizations, has implemented more than 4,260 projects in 113 countries, with a total value exceeding $8.4 billion.

These programs cover food security, water, sanitation and hygiene, health, camp coordination, education, protection, and emergency relief.
