DAMASCUS: Syria’s Interior Ministry said it had arrested the main suspect in the 2013 Tadamon massacre, one of the worst acts of violence attributed to the former government of Bashar Assad.
Security forces on Friday arrested Amjad Youssef in a move described by human rights advocates and local observers as a “historic turning point.”
The 2013 massacre was first uncovered through a series of videos filmed by the perpetrators themselves.
These recordings eventually reached researchers in Europe who transformed them into an investigative report published by The Guardian in 2022.
International investigations and the shocking footage documented brutal executions carried out in Damascus’s Tadamon neighborhood.
The videos showed unarmed civilians being forcibly marched toward a burning pit, while a man believed to be Youssef appeared in footage. The massacre claimed the lives of 41 people, according to investigators, and sparked global outrage due to the brutality witnessed on film.
Youssef became known in media and human rights circles as “The Butcher of Tadamon” for his alleged role in the atrocity.
Security agencies continue their investigations to uncover any additional accomplices or potential support networks, ensuring transparency throughout the judicial process.
