ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan underwent a fourth eye procedure at a state-run hospital in Islamabad this week, with doctors on Tuesday reporting signs of clinical improvement in his condition.
Khan, who has been jailed at Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison since 2023 in connection with multiple legal cases, was taken on Monday to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for follow-up treatment related to an ongoing eye condition, according to a note from the hospital administration.
The 74-year-old former premier remains at the center of Pakistan’s polarized political landscape, with his health and jail conditions closely watched by supporters, political rivals and rights observers. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has repeatedly raised concerns over his medical care and access to treatment during his incarceration. The government and jail authorities deny mistreatment.
“An eye scan performed before the procedure showed clinical improvement,” the PIMS administration said in a press brief, referring to an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan used to examine the retina and other structures inside the eye.
The hospital said Khan was brought in for his fourth intravitreal injection, a procedure commonly used to treat retinal and other eye-related conditions through medication injected into the eye.
Doctors examined Khan before the procedure and found him to be clinically stable, according to the statement.
“The procedure was performed as a day care surgery,” the hospital said, adding that he remained “vitally stable before, during and after the procedure.”
PIMS said Khan was discharged after the treatment with instructions for follow-up care.
Khan has faced a series of legal and political challenges since his removal from the PM’s office in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in 2022. He is currently serving sentences at Adiala jail, facing cases related to corruption and state secrets, which he maintains are politically motivated.
Earlier this month, jail officials told Arab News Bushra Khan, the jailed wife of the former prime minister, had also undergone surgery on her right eye at a private hospital after being diagnosed with retinal detachment.
Bushra has been in and out of detention since January 2024, with significant periods of imprisonment and house arrest. She is currently serving a 17-year sentence, as of December 2025, in a case involving the sale of state gifts when her husband was premier. Khan’s PTI party has consistently questioned the conditions of her confinement and access to health care.
