JEDDAH, 25 March 2005 — A would-be election candidate ran red lights and sped to the election center to register himself to contest the April 21 municipal poll, risking his and other motorists’ lives, Al-Madinah reported. Police detected the speedster and gave chase but the man refused to stop until he reached the election center. The candidate refused to talk to the police officer saying that he must go inside first and register his name as a candidate. He asked the police officer to wait until he performed his civic duty. When the officer insisted that he should come out and talk to him, the man asked him to quickly write him a ticket because he was busy trying to register and serve the country. The officer told him that he must first respect the traffic law before he tried to serve the country. He described him as a bad influence on society if he ever got elected. Yesterday was the last day for candidates to register.
