CAIRO, 18 April 2005 — Social studies Professor Izzat Kareem has lashed out at seductive music videos which she said caused an increase of divorce and drug abuse rates among the young generation in Egypt. She was addressing a seminar on pornographic music videos held at the Cairo Opera House.

Head of the Egyptian Musicians Association Hassan Abu Al-Soud and singer Anoshka also took part in the seminar.

Izzat said that the new trend of music videos and the numerous music channels has caused traditionally strong family ties to break, reported the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera.

The professor added almost every husband was demanding that his wife look like Haifa Wahbi, Ruby, Nancy Ajram, and so on, and since such a change was impossible for most women their husbands were looking elsewhere for seductive singers’ look-alikes. Teenage girls, she said, were dressing and acting like seductive singers to attract attention.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Censorship Committee has started a campaign against seductive music videos and refused to allow the airing of over 20 music videos by different singers.
