WESTFIELD: Michael La Sasso wrote one of the most remarkable stories in LIV Golf history on Sunday, closing with a 5-under 65 to win LIV Golf Indianapolis 2026 at 18-under.
The championship is his first professional victory, and at just 22 years old, the HyFlyers GC rookie became the youngest winner in League history.
Legion XIII, meanwhile, ran away with the Team Championship for the second consecutive season, capping a dominant campaign in which captain Jon Rahm took both the individual season-long title and the team crown at The Club at Chatham Hills.
La Sasso entered the week with a T12 as his only top-30 LIV Golf finish but ended it as a champion, closing out four rounds of 71-60-66-65 to hold off a furious charge from Rahm, who carded a 7-under 63, the low round of the day, to finish solo second at 17-under. Rahm, who had already secured his third consecutive individual championship coming into Indianapolis, pushed all the way to the final hole before La Sasso’s steady closing 65 proved just enough with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
La Sasso barely had words for the moment after it was over. “I don’t even know what to say,” he said. “I’m shaking if I’m being honest. It was unbelievable. I thought I played great all day and just kind of waited for my moment, and it finally came on the last. Pretty funny.”
The 22-year-old had told his team’s social media staffer the night before that this would be the week he broke through.
“I told our social media guy last night, I said, I’ll be honest, this is going to be the one I win,” La Sasso said. “I spoke it into existence well before this week. The fact that it’s actually come true, it’s unbelievable, but yeah, I’m at a loss for words.”
He added he was glad his parents were there on-site to see his first professional win in person, adding friends had asked about flying in the night before and he’d said he planned to win regardless.
Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau tied for third at 16-under, with Garcia closing in 5-under 65 and DeChambeau matching with a 6-under 64. DeChambeau said he simply ran into a leaderboard that got the better of him down the stretch.
“I played good today. I kept the ball in front of me for the most part and didn’t make too many mistakes,” he said. “I was proud of the way I fought, and I started to catch some momentum on that back nine. Just the putts didn’t drop today, and that’s golf. It’s a game of inches.”
He also credited Rahm’s charge, saying: “He’s an incredible golfer, and really impressed with how he’s come back. I played with him the first round and he shot 3-under and didn’t look like much, and for him to go and be at 17-under at the end of this is pretty impressive.”
Scott Vincent, Laurie Canter and Richard T. Lee tied for fifth at 15-under, with Lee’s final-round 63 the low score of the day.
The team race belonged to Legion XIII from start to finish on Sunday. Rahm’s closing 63 anchored a 270 as a team, pushing Legion XIII to a four-round total of 44-under and a six-shot victory over HyFlyers GC, who finished second at 38-under behind La Sasso’s individual heroics. Ripper GC was third at 36-under, and 4Aces GC rounded out the top four at 32-under.
The team championship victory gives Legion XIII back-to-back titles and adds a fitting exclamation point to Rahm’s season, in which he already claimed his third consecutive individual title before adding the team crown.
