Sparkling Wells in Command as Red Sox Cruise

DETROIT, 16 June 2005 — David Wells allowed one hit over seven innings after pitching a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings as the Red Sox mauled the Cincinnati Reds 7-0 in Interleague play in Boston on Tuesday.

Wells (5-4) struck out five and walked two in winning his third straight decision and Manny Ramirez homered in the third consecutive game for the Red Sox. Wells stretched his scoreless inning streak to 17 while throwing 110 pitches, a season high.

In other games, Chris Carpenter was also hot on the mound and pitched a one-hitter against his former team as the St Louis Cardinals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0.

Carpenter (9-4) allowed only a sixth inning double by Russ Adams, striking out 10 and walking one. Larry Walker homered twice to wind up with three hits and four RBI and Albert Pujols also had three hits and drove in two runs.

In Cleveland, Jake Westbrook pitched seven strong innings as the Indians beat the Colorado Rockies 11-2. Westbook (3-9) allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Travis Hafner homered and drove in three runs for Cleveland and Jhonny Peralta also drove in three runs.

In Seattle, Dave Hansen homered and drove in two runs to help the Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Ichiro Suzuki led of the game with a single — the 1,000th hit of his major league career.

In New York, Mike Mussina pitched a five hit complete-game shutout to back the Yankees to a 9-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mussina (7-4) struck out six batters and walked one for his second shutout of the season.

In Baltimore, Miguel Tejada had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning to pace the Orioles to a 6-1 win over the Houston Astros. Tejada also scored two runs in the win and Rafael Palmeiro added a two-run single in the eighth inning.

In Arlington, Kelly Johnson and Julio Franco hit fifth-inning home runs that paced the Atlanta Braves to a 7-2 win over the Rangers. Johnson’s three-run blast was the first homer of his major league career.

In Chicago, Troy Glaus had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 10-4 win over the White Sox. Shawn Green added a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Javier Vazquez (7-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in eight innings for the win.

In Oakland, Eric Byrnes hit a solo homer in the eighth inning that capped the A’s 5-0 win over the New York Mets. Mark Ellis had two hits in the win, including a two-run double in the fourth inning.

In Detroit, Placido Polanco was three-for-four and scored three runs to help the Tigers double the San Diego Padres 8-4. Brandon Inge hit a two-run homer and Rondell White scored two runs.

In St Petersburg, Tomo Ohka tossed a nine-hit shutout that backed the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-0 win over the Devil Rays.

Ohka (5-3) struck out six batters and did not allow a walk in his first complete game since 2003. Lyle Overbay had three hits, including a two-run double in the first inning.

In Minneapolis, Shannon Stewart drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning to lift the Twins to a 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. Michael Cuddyer hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and Jacque Jones scored the tying run in the sixth.

In Kansas City, Shane Costa belted a solo homer in the fifth inning that gave the Royals a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. David DeJesus added a three-run shot. Runelvys Hernandez (4-7) won his second straight decision after holding the Dodgers to two runs and eight hits in six innings.

In Anaheim, Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning that helped the Washington Nationals to a 6-3 win over the Angels. Gary Majewski (2-0) was the winner after holding the Angels scoreless on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Cubs Rout Marlins

In New York, Sergio Mitre pitched a complete-game five-hitter and Aramis Ramirez hit a pair of home runs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 14-0 pasting of the Florida Marlins in National League plat at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

Registering a second shutout within the space of a week, Mitre (2-1) struck out three and did not walk a batter and Ramirez drove in four runs as the Cubs pounded out 18 hits.

Derrek Lee also homered, his league leading 18th of the season, had four hits and drove in three runs for the Cubs, while Michael Barrett also hit a home run and had four RBI.

Jeromy Burnitz added three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Cubs, who supported Mitre with three runs in the third and five more in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead. Josh Beckett (7-5) allowed four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking none, and took the loss. Carlos Delgado had two of the five hits for the Marlins.
