Glavine Sparkles as Mets Tame Nationals

WASHINGTON, 8 July 2005 — Mike Cameron homered and Tom Glavine battled to his third straight win as the New York Mets downed the Washington Nationals 5-3 in National League play at RFK Stadium on Wednesday.

Glavine (6-7) allowed three runs on nine hits in an unsteady 5 2/3 innings of work but held on to record the victory.

Aaron Heilman tossed 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief and Braden Looper came on in the ninth to get the final three outs for his 19th save.

Livan Hernandez (12-3) was saddled with the loss, charged with five runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, bringing his career-high 11-game winning streak to an end.

In Pittsburgh, Vicente Padilla tossed six scoreless innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hit shutout as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Pirates 5-0. Padilla (4-8) scattered four hits, struck out two and walked four then Ryan Madson, Ugueth Urbina and Billy Wagner each pitched one inning of relief to complete the shutout.

In Miami, Juan Encarnacion’s 12th inning RBI single capped a Florida rally as the Marlins came back to edge the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4. Encarnacion, who forced extra innings by scoring the game-tying run in the eighth, sent Marlins fans home happy when he lined a bases-loaded single up the middle that brought across Juan Pierre with the winning run.

In Houston, Andy Pettitte collected his third consecutive win as the Astros edged the San Diego Padres 5-4 but he was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning with a sore elbow.

In Denver, Jason Phillips and Antonio Perez cracked three-run homers, sparking the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-5 win over the Colorado Rockies. Brad Penny (5-5) took credit for the win, allowing three runs — two earned — on nine hits while striking out five and walking three in 6 2/3 innings.

In San Francisco, Lance Niekro had a pinch-hit two-run triple and Alex Sanchez drove in a pair of runs, helping the Giants to a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

In Phoenix, So Taguchi scored on David Eckstein’s ninth-inning suicide squeeze to earn the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In Atlanta, the game between the Braves and Chicago Cubs was postponed because of heavy rain and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader.

Lilly Blooms on Mound as Blue Jays Blank Athletics

Ted Lilly threw seven scoreless innings and Vernon Wells belted a three-run homer as Toronto Blue Jays blanked the Oakland Athletics 8-0 in American League play at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday.

Lilly (7-8) scattered six hits while striking out five and walking a pair before turning the mound over to Jason Frasor and Justin Speier, who each tossed one inning of relief to complete the shutout.

In Arlington, David Ortiz homered and drove in three runs while Matt Clement delivered 8 2/3 sharp innings, guiding the Boston Red Sox past the Texas Rangers 7-4.

In Anaheim, Garret Anderson smacked a three-run seventh inning homer and Juan Rivera added a solo shot to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

In Cleveland, Jeremy Bonderman delivered eight solid innings as Chris Shelton and Magglio Ordonez each drove in a pair of runs in helping the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 win over the Indians.

In Chicago, Frank Thomas belted a three-run homer for the second consecutive game and Carl Everett had three hits as the White Sox rolled past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-2 to complete a three-game series sweep.

Jose Contreras (4-5) took credit for the win, allowing two runs on six hits in six-plus innings to improve his lifetime record against Tampa Bay to 4-0.

In Kansas City, Tony Graffanino homered and Runelvys Hernandez provided six strong innings as the Royals rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Hernandez (6-9) gave but nine hits but just one unearned run to register the win while Mike MacDougal recorded the final five outs for his 11th save of the season.
