NEW DELHI, 28 July 2005 — The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the 1998 Punjab and Haryana High Court order convicting a top police official on charges of outraging the modesty of a senior woman administrative service officer Rupan Deol-Bajaj. The court, however, rejected Bajaj’s plea for imposing a jail term on K.P.S. Gill, former director general of India’s Border Security Force and presently chief of the country’s Hockey Federation. Bajaj had filed the case after Gill allegedly molested her at a dinner party at the official residence of a senior bureaucrat in the Punjab state government in 1988. Bajaj was then a senior official in the state government while Gill was Punjab’s top cop, known for his successful efforts to wipe out terrorism in that state.
