RIYADH, 1 November 2005 — Border guards seized more than two tons of hashish on an island off the Kingdom’s eastern coast in one the largest drug hauls in recent times, officials said yesterday.
Gen. Talal Al-Angawi, chief of the Saudi Border Guards, said the drugs were seized following a raid conducted on the island near the industrial city of Jubail earlier this month. “Border guards were patrolling and keeping a watch on the island near Jubail, which followed an earlier search operation,” he said.
Gen. Al-Angawi said this was one of largest hauls that the guard had ever uncovered. On several previous occasions, the guard has arrested drug traffickers while trying to sneak into the country with drugs and liquor.
The border guards have seized a large quantity of weapons in the last nine months including 12 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, half a million rounds of ammunition and 14,000 sticks of dynamite.
