20 Percent Increase in Umrah Pilgrims

JEDDAH, 28 October 2006 — There was a 20 percent increase in the number of pilgrims who came from abroad for Umrah during this Ramadan compared to last year, according to Interior Minister Prince Naif, who is chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee.

In a message to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Naif said his ministry had deployed 32,994 officers in Makkah and Madinah to ensure the security and safety of pilgrims, who numbered three million in the last days of Ramadan.

Prince Naif said the daily traffic of vehicles to and from Makkah increased to 100,000 from 20,000 during Ramadan. King Abdullah commended the officers for their successful handling of pilgrims.
