TRIVANDRUM, 22 May 2006 — Junior foreign minister E. Ahamed yesterday took up the reins of his Muslim League party in Kerala state to stem the growing dissent after the worst-ever electoral debacle. He would now be the general secretary of the party in place of the powerful former minister P.K. Kunhalikkutty who put in his papers owning up moral responsibility for the rout.

In Malappuram, ailing state unit President Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal said former minister C.T. Ahmed Ali had been elected the floor leader of the party in the state assembly.

P.K. Abdurabb is the deputy leader.
