JEDDAH, 29 August 2006 — With many people tinting their car windows, the authorities have approved changes to a ministerial decision that now allows cars carrying people with medical problems to have tinted windows or curtains.
According to the new ruling, drivers who wish to tint their car windows need to provide valid medical proof that their health is at risk if exposed to sunlight.
A previous decision was issued last year prohibiting drivers from covering the front widows of their cars with anything that might hinder their vision.
The decision, however, allowed 30 percent tint on the door widows.
The authorities have studied the increasing trend of tinted windows, especially among the youth, and found that tinted windows also hinder the work of checkpoint police.
In a bid to make the work of police easier, the authorities have also stopped the import of certain forms of plastic shading and imposed fines on shops caught selling these products.
In Riyadh this year alone there were 100,000 reported cases of traffic violations. While in the city of Jeddah there were around 17,000 traffic violations reported during the current year.
