SHARJAH, 14 June 2006 — As part of its “Face To Face With Regional Films” program, Qanat Al-Qasba, cultural leisure hub in Sharjah, will feature the Algerian film “Les Diseurs de Vérité” (Speakers Of Truth) tomorrow (Thursday June 15) at the Al Qasba Theater at 8.30pm.
After the viewing of the film, visitors will have the opportunity to meet with filmmaker, Karim Traidia, in an open discussion about several topics including the current cinematic trends in the Arab World and in Algeria in particular.
The 74-minute French Drama with English subtitles revolves around a prominent and outspoken journalist, Sahafi (Sid Ahmed Agoumi) who is forced to seek political asylum in the Netherlands when his courageous and satiric columns endanger his life in his country. Much of the film occurs during a prolonged exchange between Sahafi, reptilian Dutch bureaucrat (Jaap Spijkers) and a sympathetic translator (Monic Hendrickx).
Renowned Algerian filmmaker Karim Traïdia directs the film that was screened at the 2000 Rotterdam Film Festival.
Traïdia studied sociology in Paris and moved to Holland in 1979. In 1991 he completed his studies at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy, and since then has been making films with definite messages.
Meanwhile, Shaikha Bodour Sultan Al Qasimi, chairperson of Qanat Al-Qasba Development Authority in Sharjah has appointed Marwan Jassim Al-Sarkal as chief executive officer of the authority.
Al-Sarkal, who has a notable professional background, assured that he would spare no efforts in enhancing and developing Qanat Al Qasba to be the ultimate leisure, cultural and tourism destination for families as well as people of all age groups and nationalities.
