CAIRO, 8 January 2007 — Funeral prayers for the Egyptian comedienne Suad Nasr who died on Friday were said at the Sayyedah Nafeesah Mosque in Cairo on Saturday. A large number of artists and government officials, including Brig. Ahmad Hashad representing President Hosni Mubarak, attended the ceremony, the Al-Watan daily reported yesterday.

Her death, after spending nearly a year in a coma reportedly brought on by a medical error, has angered the Egyptian community of artists who are demanding an inquiry into her death.

Actor Mohammad Sobhi, a long-time associate, said “The culprit responsible for her death should be punished.”

Sobhi believes that his colleague’s life ended the day she was admitted to hospital.

She was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 27, 2005 for a lipectomy for the removal of extra fat. An error in the administration of anesthesia caused the interruption of blood supply to her brain, which caused irreparable damage to vital organs and loss of consciousness.

Some parts of her internal organs were taken for forensic tests in order to ascertain the exact cause of death, according to sources at the department of legal medicine. The department will submit a final report in a few days.
