RIYADH, 13 January 2007 — Extensive arrangements are being made by the Polish Embassy to hold the “Great Orchestra of Festive Charity” at the ambassador’s residence next Thursday. A part of the proceeds would be diverted to the welfare of distressed Palestinian children.

The Great Orchestra of Festive Charity is the biggest and most prosperous organization in Poland that concerns itself with saving children’s lives. It disburses funds for sophisticated medical and surgical equipment for public hospitals throughout the country.

“The event is traditionally held only once a year on the first or second day of January,” Polish Ambassador Adam Kulach told Arab News, adding that the money collected all over Poland by thousands of volunteers, was mainly by students and school pupils. The envoy indicated that each person making donations in cash or kind in aid of the charity, would receive a small red paper heart-form sticker which is the main emblem of the event.

The highlight of the evening program is a public auction where donations are received in kind from philanthropists and are sold through bids at the fall of the hammer.

Kulach said part of the auction as well as 50 percent of the entrance fees would be devoted this year to the raising of money for a renowned children’s care institution in Gaza. The money collected will be transmitted to the recipients through official channels by the Palestinian Embassy in Riyadh. Entrance fee to the show is priced at SR20 per visitor.
