Landslide Kills 12 in Azad Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, 25 February 2007 — At least 12 people were killed in massive landslide triggered by rains in Azad Kashmir yesterday, police said.

A van with around 20 passengers on board was traveling in the southern district of Poonch when it was hit by the landslide.

“Twelve bodies have been recovered and five seriously wounded people have also been pulled out,” local police official Mohammad Anwar said, adding that rescuers were searching for ay remaining passengers.

Landslides are common in Pakistan’s northern mountainous areas, which were hit by a massive earthquake in October 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people.
