DUBAI, 6 March 2007 — Marking the 27th plantation week, which is being observed countrywide until Thursday, two new parks are being opened this week in Dubai.

The parks are part of a series of activities that are taking place this week that includes the launch of several landscaping and beautification projects and the holding of educational workshops for students to mark the 27th plantation week.

One of the parks, costing 12.7 million dirhams, is being opened for the public today in Nad Al-Sheba. Meanwhile, another park — the Al-Qouz Park costing 6.5 million dirhams — is scheduled to be opened tomorrow.

The Nad Al-Sheba Park, located near the race course and along the Dubai Al-Ain Road, is on a six hectare piece of greenery and offers local residents a place for recreation and various play areas. The Al-Qouz Park, located close to the second interchange on the Sheikh Zayed Road, is located on a two-hectare piece of land and boasts lots of greenery, shaded seating and games areas.

The week’s activities started with a tree plantation ceremony at the Zayed Elementary School for boys in which hundreds of students took part. These parks and other landscaping projects come as part of the civic body’s strategic plan to green as much as eight percent of Dubai’s urban area in the next three years.

Three landscaping projects will be launched as part of the plantation week activities. These include a project on the third interchange of the Sheikh Zayed Road, second phase of beautification covering a stretch of four kilometers on Jumeira Road, and the third phase of the same road covering a stretch of four kilometers.

A total of 200,000 saplings will be distributed free of cost.
